Success Stories

Booker was surrendered to Furever After Small Dog Rescue by his owners due to excessive barking related to anxiety.  We agreed to take him into our care as his owners were at their wits' end and we felt that Booker's anxiety would only become worse in a shelter environment.  We believed that Booker's behavior would improve with some confidence-building and a consistent approach.  When he initially came into our care, his anxiety level was sky-high and his incessant barking tried his foster mom's patience.  But patience won and Booker continued to improve under the loving care of his dedicated foster mom.  After spending 4 1/2 months in foster care, Booker was ready to find his forever home.  He was adopted by a recently retired couple in Nanaimo who are committed to working with Booker and are able to provide him with the calm and supportive environment that he needs in order to blossom.

***An update from Booker’s family:

"Booker continues to do well.  He really is a sweetheart.  Our cat, Tigger, keeps trying to get Book to play with him but so far, Booker has declined. It is obvious that it is going to happen one day.

We had our friends and their dog, Sage, over for dinner on Saturday.  Booker barked his little head off when they came in.  We did a time out and our friends ignored Booker as instructed.  It took about half an hour for Booker to calm down enough to stay in the living room with us all and about another half hour before he settled down completely.  However, after that he sat by Sage to get treats and they went outside together to go to the bathroom. We were pleased at how it went.

Our other friends came down with the flu last week so we had to put our little "meet and greet" sessions with their dog, Mikey, on hold for a time.  Monday we had two sessions that went fairly well and we took a short walk together on the second session. Yesterday things went well enough with the "meet and greet" that we actually did a full walk together.  It is so great to watch Booker make progress.

In short, we are pleased as punch with Booker."
