Success Stories

Macy was found tied to a tree on a one meter tether in a remote area.  She had been there for weeks in cold and rain and she had no access to food or water for several days prior to being rescued.  She was filthy and she was favoring her right hind leg.  She was in desperate need of medical attention.

Once Macy was safely in our care, our first priority was to get her cleaned up and examined by a vet.  Although she was only a few years old, Macy had been badly neglected and she was in need of treatment for multiple dental abscesses.  She also had severe bilateral luxating patellas, which were causing her a lot of pain and they were bound to get worse over time without intervention.  The first step was to take care of Macy's teeth - we needed to treat the infection before we could move forward with orthopedic surgery.  After Macy had taken some time to heal from her dental surgery, we proceeded with surgery on both of her knees.  Her rehabilitation and recovery went very smoothly - she was such a little trooper!

In addition to all of Macy's medical needs, she also had significant fear issues related to her past.  While in foster care, her dedicated foster mom worked with her for three months to help build her confidence and improve her socialization.  Macy progressed in leaps and bounds and after being micro-chipped and vaccinated, she was ready to find her forever home.  Macy was adopted by an amazing couple in Sidney and she also has two canine brothers to run and play with!

Special thanks to Anne and Janet for sponsoring Macy and assisting with her medical costs.

***An update from Macy’s family:

"...Macy is doing just great, she now slides in bed beside us under the covers and stays there for hours.  She loves the heat, she even tries to find sunny spots on the floor or carpet and lays there totally contented.

She slept in the car all the way to the vet's office and back and is a great car rider, not a peep out of her, unlike Barney who squeals, screams and barks at everything going by.  She was such a hit at the vets, even though people had their own dogs with them, they couldn't resist coming over to talk with Macy and stroke her.  Our little princess took it all like it was her due!!!

She enjoys sitting on the deck with us and she is so alert that she notices the birds, bees and butterflies when they fly by.  She is eternally curious and I sure hope that we can take her for longer walks once her pins are removed.  I know she will enjoy that."

"...All went well at the vets; the stitches came out and Macy is like a new dog.  We are increasing her walk time and just playing it by ear but so far she has had no problems keeping up.

She has now adopted an old, soft flannel sheet which she likes to be wrapped up in on top of our bed when it is time to go to sleep.  Hours later she will be inside this cozy king-sized sheet and is out for the count.

We are slowly introducing her to other people, and trying to curb the barking on our walks when she sees bikes, kids and others on the road.  This will take time, but I think she is smart enough to learn this in the future.  You can see that she was a fighter otherwise she might not be as healthy, curious and loving as she is now.

Still trying to get a photo of her where EVERYONE will say 'Awwwwww!'  I want a picture of her on my locker at work as well, since I have one of the grandson and of course, Barnie and Sputnik.

Cheers!  Enjoy the long weekend!"
