Success Stories

Teddy was thirteen years old when his elderly guardian passed away and he was surrendered to a local animal control facility.  Teddy had been battling severe allergies for his entire life and he was suffering from chronic ear and skin infections.  He also had a mouthful of abscessed teeth and was in dire need of some extensive dental work. Teddy was taken into our care and placed in a loving foster home so that we could provide him with the medical attention that he so desperately needed, while getting to know him better.  It didn't take very long to realize that Teddy was exhibiting early signs of dementia, in addition to having vision and hearing deficits.

After spending nine months in our care, Teddy has settled nicely into his foster home and we feel that it would be unfair to re-home him again at this stage in his life.  His foster mom loves him dearly, so he will remain permanently in our foster care program where he can continue to live out his retirement in comfort and safety.

***A note from Teddy's foster mom:

"When I first saw pictures of Teddy at the Kamloops pound, I knew Furever After was rescuing a very needy little soul.  He was old, he was falling apart, he was neglected and this was clear from the pictures.  Senior dogs are often my heart dogs and Teddy has been no exception.  After our first vet visit, we were pretty sure that Teddy was going to be a permanent foster.  I had taken one look into his cloudy little eyes and knew that he was going nowhere.  Chronic ear and skin allergies, infections, blindness, mangled ears, cloudy eyes, missing patches of hair and horrible teeth all contributed to how much Teddy needed Furever After.

Teddy's person had passed away and unfortunately due to dementia had stopped caring for Teddy a long time ago.  After we were able to begin clearing up the list of Teddy's medical issues, his true personality began to shine through.  He was then and always will be forever and fondly referred to as "my grumpy old man".  He won't stop chasing the cat, he won't share his toys, he has a large area of personal space that is OFF limits to the other dogs, he needs to be separated during feeding and he gets very jealous of the other dogs getting affection.  He fits in perfectly and none of us can imagine our house, or our lives, before Teddy.  We definitely had an adjustment period and everyone had to work things out, but he is a very special boy.  He can make me laugh more than any other dog, his spirit and will to live continue to teach me things every day, he knows what he wants and he can make my heart ache more than any other dog just by looking at him.

When I picked Teddy up at the airport and let him out of his kennel for the first time, I made a promise that we would do everything we could to make his golden years as comfortable as they should be from that day on.  Teddy, I hope you know you have made my life fuller and taught me many things about both dogs and people.  I hope I have been able to give you everything I promised and that you are with us for years to come."
