The Adoption Process

Our goal is to find the most suitable home to meet the individual needs of each dog for the lifetime of the dog.  In order to achieve this objective, our adoption screening process is quite extensive.  Due to the logistical difficulties of providing thorough pre-adoption screening and post-adoption follow-up outside of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, we are unable to facilitate long distance adoptions outside of these areas.

The adoption process involves filling out an adoption application form, followed by a telephone interview to discuss your application and to answer any questions you may have about the particular dog you are interested in adopting or the adoption process in general.  Then we contact three personal references, including a vet and grooming reference if possible.  The next step is to come and visit you in your home.  The purpose of this visit is to meet all of the family members and to ensure that your home will be a safe and suitable environment for the particular dog you are interested in adopting.  Finally, we arrange for all of your family members to meet the dog in order to ensure that everyone is compatible.  If we are quite certain that the dog is a good match for your family, then the adoption is finalized, an adoption contract is signed and an adoption fee of $250 is paid.  The adoption fee is used to off-set some of the costs we have incurred in caring for the dog.  In the rare event that the cost of caring for the dog was less than $250, the remainder of the money goes directly towards helping other dogs in need.

Post-adoption follow-up is provided via e-mail, telephone or home visits, depending on the situation, in order to ensure a successful transition of the new family member into the home.  We remain in contact with our adopters and provide advice and support as needed to help ensure that every adoption is successful.  However, if for any reason the adoption does not work out, we will always take our dogs back into care at any time throughout their lives.  In fact, this is a condition of adoption which helps us to ensure that none of our dogs will ever end up in shelters again.

If you would like to fill out an adoption application form for one of our dogs, please contact us via e-mail so that we can tell you a bit more about the particular dog you are interested in adopting and answer any questions you may have.  We reply to e-mails as promptly as possible, but please be patient as we are all volunteers with jobs and families of our own, in addition to our rescue work.
