Who
We Are and What We Do
We are a group of
dedicated volunteers whose focus is to help small breed dogs
who find themselves homeless through no fault of their own. We
began our rescue efforts in September 2002, became incorporated as a
registered non-profit society in July 2006 and received our registered
charity status in March 2009.
During this time, we have played an integral role in the rescue,
rehabilitation
and re-homing of dozens of abused, neglected and abandoned dogs, many of whom were in
danger of euthanasia in overcrowded animal control facilities. We work co-operatively with
other rescue groups and shelters in order to achieve the common goal
of giving homeless dogs a second chance at life and happiness. We are
based in Qualicum
Beach, but we have
successfully placed dogs in wonderful homes all over
Vancouver Island, the
Sunshine Coast
and throughout the
Lower Mainland of British Columbia.
The majority of the dogs we rescue come from animal control facilities, although we
occasionally accept owner surrenders as well.
Our first priority is to help with dogs in
local shelters who require our assistance. These are often dogs
with high medical needs or those who are extremely stressed in the busy
kennel
environment. When the resources are available, we also rescue dogs from
shelters in Los Angeles, where they are in imminent danger of euthanasia
due to critical overcrowding.
The dogs in our care are not kept in a shelter or kennel; they are
fostered in the private homes of our volunteers. They spend a minimum of one to two weeks in
foster care, during which time they are provided with appropriate medical
treatment and their foster parents have an opportunity to get to know
their individual temperaments and needs.
While in our care, each dog is examined by a vet, spayed or neutered,
updated on vaccinations, tattooed, micro-chipped and provided with any
medical and/or dental care that is needed. Training is begun for any
behavioral issues that are identified while the dog is in foster care.
Once any medical and/or behavioral needs have been addressed and
we've had a chance to get to know each dog's individual personality and
specific requirements, the dog is listed for adoption. In order to find
the best possible match between dog and family, there is an extensive
adoption screening process. Our
goal is to find the most suitable home to meet the individual needs of
each dog for the duration of the dog’s life.
Unfortunately, we are unable to facilitate long-distance adoptions
due to the logistical difficulties of providing thorough pre-adoption
screening and post-adoption follow-up outside of
Vancouver Island, the
Sunshine Coast
and the Lower Mainland of
British Columbia.

but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do
something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do
something I can do."
